What Is e-Stewards Certification — And Why It Matters for TerraCycle Commercial

As TerraCycle Commercial continues to grow with the recent integration of North Coast Services, we’re excited to highlight a key distinction that sets our newest partner apart: North Coast Services is e-Stewards® certified.

But what does that really mean—and why should it matter to you?

What Is the e-Stewards Standard?

The e-Stewards Standard is the global gold standard for responsible electronics recycling. Developed by the Basel Action Network (BAN), it is the most rigorous certification in the industry for recyclers handling electronic waste (e-waste). The goal is simple: ensure electronics are recycled in a way that protects people, data, and the planet.

To become e-Stewards certified, a recycler must meet strict environmental, health, and safety requirements that go well beyond regulatory compliance. Here are some of the key criteria:

  • No Export of Hazardous E-Waste to Developing Countries
Certified facilities are prohibited from exporting toxic e-waste to countries that lack the infrastructure to manage it safely—a major concern in the global recycling ecosystem.

  • Data Security Protocols
All data-bearing devices are handled with certified data destruction methods to ensure sensitive information never falls into the wrong hands.

  • No Use of Prison Labor
The e-Stewards standard prohibits the use of prison labor in electronics recycling, ensuring fair and ethical labor practices throughout the process.

  • Protection for Workers and the Environment
Facilities must follow high standards for worker safety and environmental protection, including safe handling of hazardous substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium.

Why This Certification Matters

E-waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world—and also one of the most hazardous. When not handled properly, electronics can leak toxic substances into soil and groundwater, posing risks to ecosystems and human health.

By choosing an e-Stewards certified recycler like North Coast Services, businesses and institutions can be confident that their electronics are being processed ethically, securely, and sustainably.

This certification also aligns with the mission of TerraCycle Commercial: to offer full-service, responsible waste management solutions that meet the highest standards in the industry.

A Responsible Future With TerraCycle Commercial
